Recognize the competing risks

DayZ's official beginner advice names players, infected and your own survival needs as threats. Before approaching someone, check whether the encounter helps your situation or simply adds uncertainty while you already need supplies or shelter.

Observe from a position you can leave

Look for how many people are present, what routes they control and whether you have somewhere to move. Avoid committing to a cramped approach before deciding what you want from the interaction. Do not treat one visible player as proof they are alone.

Keep communication specific

If you choose to communicate, state the limited request or intent clearly. Give the other player space to respond without pretending a friendly sentence guarantees cooperation. Continue assessing the surroundings rather than focusing entirely on the conversation.

Prepare a navigation-based exit

The publisher points to in-game maps and compasses for navigation rather than an automatic mini-map. Know a landmark or route you can follow if you leave quickly. A vague instruction to run away is less useful than a direction you can actually recognize.

Judge the decision, not only the outcome

After a dangerous encounter, ask whether you ignored an extra player, became trapped or stayed after the original purpose ended. A successful escape can be a better result than winning a fight that consumes the supplies needed for the next leg. No gesture, outfit or voice line is presented here as proof of trustworthy intent.
