Horizon Forbidden West Stealth Guide: Scanning, Infiltration & Silent Attacks

Stealth in Horizon Forbidden West is strongest when used as preparation. Aloy’s Focus and Infiltrator progression let you understand the battlefield before machines or human enemies know where you are.

Scan Before Entering

Use the Focus to identify:

  • Machines.
  • Important components.
  • Enemy positions.
  • Potential routes.
  • Environmental opportunities.

Stealth becomes much easier when you already know where the major threats are.

Track Machine Movement

Machines often move through predictable areas.

Watch long enough to determine:

  • When one machine becomes isolated.
  • Where it turns away.
  • Which route gives you the safest approach.

Use Cover

Stay behind terrain and vegetation that blocks sight while moving toward a target.

Do not cross open space merely because the enemy is currently facing the other direction if another machine can see the same route.

Infiltrator Skill Tree

Forbidden West includes an Infiltrator branch dedicated to strengthening stealth and surprise attacks.

If stealth is a major part of your playstyle, invest in this tree instead of expecting basic stealth tools to carry the entire game without progression.

Silent Attacks

When an enemy can be approached safely, silent attacks can reduce the number of threats before open combat begins.

Choose isolated targets first.

Do Not Attack a Target That Is Being Watched

Before committing, check:

  • Nearby machines.
  • Human patrols.
  • Elevated enemies.
  • Whether your escape route remains clear.

Use Ranged Openings

Stealth does not require every enemy to be eliminated at close range.

Ranged attacks can remove:

  • Dangerous components.
  • Weak enemies.
  • High-priority targets.

before your location turns into an open battlefield.

Target Components Before the Main Fight

If stealth eventually fails, you can still enter direct combat with a major advantage if an important machine weapon or component has already been removed.

Traps

The Trapper tree supports battlefield preparation.

Place traps where enemy movement makes them useful rather than scattering them randomly.

Create a Kill Zone

A deliberate opening may involve:

  1. Scanning the patrol.
  2. Placing a trap along its route.
  3. Taking a component shot from concealment.
  4. Moving to another covered position.

Use Elemental Weaknesses From Stealth

The first shot is valuable because you choose when it happens.

Use that opportunity to apply the elemental effect most useful against the target.

Human Camps

Against human enemies:

  • Identify ranged threats first.
  • Use cover.
  • Remove isolated guards.
  • Avoid starting open combat in the center of the camp.

Do Not Force Stealth After Detection

Once several enemies know your location, transition into normal combat.

Move to a defensible position and use your full weapon set rather than crouching in place while enemies surround you.

Stealth Gear

Forbidden West armor supports different specialties.

If infiltration is central to your build, use armor and upgrades that reinforce that style.

Stealth Routine

  1. Scan the area.
  2. Identify patrols and important components.
  3. Choose a concealed approach.
  4. Remove isolated threats.
  5. Use traps or elemental attacks where appropriate.
  6. Reposition after attacks.
  7. Transition cleanly to open combat if discovered.

Common Stealth Mistakes

  • Entering without scanning.
  • Attacking a target visible to several enemies.
  • Ignoring machine components.
  • Placing traps where nothing will walk through them.
  • Remaining in the same position after a loud attack.
  • Trying to stay hidden after the entire group has already located you.

Bottom Line

Horizon Forbidden West stealth is a way to shape the battle before it begins. Scan first, track patrols, remove isolated threats and important components, use traps and elemental openings deliberately, and make the eventual direct fight easier rather than assuming every encounter must remain completely undetected.
