Set a limited goal for the trip
Decide whether you are scouting the layout or seeking a specific useful resource. Keep the first visit small enough to learn the route without risking everything needed to recover. A long inventory list is not a substitute for knowing why you are entering.
Check the base before leaving
The Facepunch-hosted Tool Cupboard guide explains that upkeep protection depends on resources and that the remaining time is displayed. Check that reserve before committing to a lengthy trip. Returning with loot is less useful if an avoidable upkeep shortage puts your existing base at risk.
Treat radiation as location-dependent
The Facepunch-hosted map documentation describes different radiation volumes around monuments, with higher-risk areas such as the top of Launch Site. Check the actual location and equipment rather than assuming one outfit or one claimed protection number covers every monument.
Leave carrying room and a route out
Take what supports the task and enough room for the supplies you intend to bring back. Identify a retreat direction before entering a confined area. If another group controls the route, reassess rather than continuing simply because the trip took time.
Return before extending the run
When you acquire something important to the next upgrade, compare banking it with entering another unknown area. Do not use this preparation page as an unverified puzzle guide: individual keycard routes, fuse steps, NPC hazards and console differences need a location-specific source.
