Confirm the cause of slow movement
Bethesda Support distinguishes over-encumbrance from temporary slowing by a hostile Frost spell and a PC movement toggle. Look for the over-encumbrance warning and inspect your load before assuming every slow step requires discarding equipment.
Get below the displayed limit
The support instructions say to reduce the current load below full Carry Weight. Compare the weight of expendable items with the supplies needed to continue. Dropping many tiny useful items can be worse than leaving one bulky object with no near-term purpose.
Sort for a practical decision
Review duplicate equipment, materials for no current project and items you intended only to sell. Keep recovery and the gear you actually use in view. Your goal is a load that lets you finish the route, not simply a completely empty inventory.
Plan a return before taking more
When space is nearly exhausted, compare returning with useful progress against entering another unknown area. Keep track of anything important you leave behind instead of assuming every container or dropped object provides permanent safe storage.
Check configuration-specific options
Use the current equipment, effect and perk descriptions for additional capacity rather than an unsupported maximum-weight claim. This guide does not recommend an infinite-carry exploit or assume every modded follower, survival setting and edition uses the same rules.
