Starfield Inventory Guide: Ship Cargo, Companions & Crafting Access

Store a resource where the next activity can actually use it. Moving a heavy material out of your backpack solves one problem but can create another if it goes into an inventory the crafting station cannot access.

Use ship cargo deliberately

Bethesda lists access through the cargo panel, the ship menu when on or near the ship, and inventory controls while aboard. Heavy crafting resources are good candidates for cargo storage. Check the ship's actual remaining capacity before transferring a large collection.

Do not mistake a companion for crafting storage

Companions can carry excess items through the gear-trade dialogue, but crafting stations do not pull resources from their inventory. Move the required materials back to yourself or ship cargo before crafting.

Choose the capacity upgrade for the right inventory

Bethesda distinguishes Weight Lifting for personal carrying capacity and Payloads for ship cargo. It also describes Extra Capacity upgrades at the Spacesuit Workbench. Read the next upgrade's requirement rather than assuming every capacity improvement affects every storage location.

Keep field supplies accessible

Use Favorites for the weapons and Aid items you actually need during exploration. Keep the loadout small enough that you can recognize the intended item instead of filling quick access with equipment you no longer use.

Use a return-to-ship routine

  1. Separate field equipment from collected resources.
  2. Move crafting materials into a suitable inventory.
  3. Review redundant gear and the next intended upgrade.
  4. Check personal and ship capacity separately before leaving.

If a recipe still shows a missing material, verify where it is stored before buying another copy. This guide does not claim every container, companion and outpost storage object shares one universal crafting inventory.
