The Witcher 3 Contract Preparation: Equipment, Signs & Hunt Checklist
Prepare for the target you are investigating
CD PROJEKT RED presents preparation as part of Witcher combat: elixirs, blade oils and appropriate weapons contribute to a hunt. Before committing to a difficult contract, our recommendation is to review the target information you have unlocked, check the active objective, and decide which tools you intend to use.
A preparation checklist should answer a specific question: what will I do differently in this encounter? Carrying many consumables is less useful than knowing when you plan to use the relevant one.
Check the information Geralt's interface provides
The official legacy PC manual documents a Bestiary, active quest objectives, item-durability indicators and a quick-access menu for Signs and items such as bombs or a crossbow. It also distinguishes Vitality, Stamina and Toxicity. Stamina is used for Signs and sprinting; potions raise Toxicity.
The manual describes the original GOTY-era interface. Current Remastered layouts and remapped bindings may differ, so use the named actions in your installed version rather than assuming a 2016 key assignment remains current.
Before leaving for a hunt
| Check | Decision to make |
|---|---|
| Objective | Which investigation or encounter step are you actually tracking? |
| Equipment | Is the intended weapon equipped, and is a durability warning present? |
| Quick access | Can you select the Sign or item you intend to use without searching every menu? |
| Resources | Do you have room to use your planned potion without ignoring Toxicity? |
| Position | Where can you move if the first approach fails? |
These decisions are our planning advice, not a universal monster weakness table. The correct response depends on the creature and the information available in your playthrough.
Use a failed attempt to choose one correction
After a difficult fight, identify the concrete problem. Did you lose track of the target, miss an opening, struggle to select an item, or run out of a resource you were depending on? Change the part responsible before changing your entire build.
Our suggested review is to write one sentence about the failure and one action for the next attempt. For example, practising quick-access selection is a different task from learning attack timing. Separating them makes your next attempt easier to evaluate.
Preparation does not guarantee a win
Good equipment cannot substitute for recognising the encounter. If your chosen tool does not solve the problem, reassess it instead of repeating the same approach. Use the Witcher 3 guide collection for the related alchemy and gear articles.
