Elden Ring Map Guide: Grace, Markers & Planning Exploration Routes
Use Elden Ring's map, Grace travel and custom markers to plan exploration, revisit unfinished routes and avoid confusing guidance with a compulsory path.
Elden Ring Map Guide: Grace, Markers & Planning Exploration Routes
Use the map to answer one question at a time
Elden Ring's map shows your position, terrain and discovered landmarks. You can place markers and travel to discovered Sites of Grace through it, although travel is restricted in some dungeons and the map cannot be opened during battle. Guidance from certain Grace locations indicates a direction to investigate; it is useful guidance rather than a requirement to fight every enemy immediately.
Choose an exploration objective
GetCheatBeacon recommends deciding what this trip is for before riding away: a visible ruin, an unfinished tunnel, an NPC you want to revisit or a route beyond your current map coverage. Trying to solve several distant objectives in one journey makes it harder to remember why you went somewhere.
- Use one marker for the current destination.
- Mark an obstacle you plan to revisit instead of repeatedly testing it unprepared.
- Remove a marker when the job is finished.
- Write down NPC instructions if you are returning after a long break.
Build a return route
When you reach a new Grace, treat it as an anchor for the next trip. Compare the visible paths and identify where you could return if the next area is too difficult. An impressive landmark is an invitation to explore, not proof that your current build must clear it now. Bandai Namco's newer starter guidance explicitly supports retreating from an opponent you cannot yet defeat.
Map fragments and unknown terrain
This page is a navigation guide, not an exhaustive fragment-location checklist. Do not substitute a guessed location or an unverified map for your actual world progress. Use the exploration guide for the existing map-fragment overview, and distinguish a revealed region from routes you have personally visited.
Plan around the problem you encountered
If the obstacle is combat, consult the build guide or weapon upgrades. If the problem is retrieving a carried balance, follow the lost-runes guide first. A map marker cannot resolve a damage shortfall or make a hazardous drop safe.
A short end-of-session routine
- Choose a familiar Grace as the restart point.
- Record the next destination and why you want to visit it.
- Keep only the markers you still need.
- Note whether the next obstacle requires an item, more preparation or simply another route.
This routine is editorial advice for returning players. It avoids prescribing one fixed region order and does not assume that owning an expansion means you have reached its entry conditions.
