SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE CHARACTER GUIDE Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a very large roster with fighters that play in completely different ways. The right character is usually the one whose strengths, movement and game plan match how you like to play. START WITH PLAYSTYLE Common styles include: • Fast rushdown • Heavy power • Projectile zoning • Defensive play • Grappling • Sword-based spacing • Aerial pressure • Technical setup play FAST CHARACTERS Fast fighters can pressure opponents quickly and move in and out of range. They often reward: • Aggressive movement • Quick reactions • Combo awareness • Strong positioning The trade-off may be lower weight or reduced survivability. HEAVY CHARACTERS Heavy fighters often deal high damage and survive longer. They may emphasize: • Powerful attacks • Strong punishment • Command grabs • Edge pressure The trade-off is usually slower movement or larger hurtboxes. SWORD AND RANGE-BASED FIGHTERS Sword users and other long-range fighters can control space. They often reward: • Spacing • Timing • Safe pressure • Punishing bad approaches PROJECTILE CHARACTERS Projectile-focused characters control distance. They may use: • Energy attacks • Items • Traps • Long-range pressure These fighters reward patience and stage awareness. RECOVERY Recovery is one of the most important characteristics for new players. Ask: • How far can the character recover? • Is the recovery predictable? • Does it travel vertically, horizontally or both? • Can opponents easily edgeguard it? BEGINNER-FRIENDLY FIGHTERS A beginner-friendly fighter usually has: • Straightforward attacks • Reliable recovery • Clear KO options • Simple movement • Easy-to-understand specials That does not mean the fighter is weak. It simply lets you learn Smash fundamentals without managing overly complicated mechanics. TECHNICAL FIGHTERS Some characters use: • Complex resources • Unusual movement • Difficult combos • Character-specific mechanics • Advanced setups These fighters can be rewarding, but expect more practice. DLC FIGHTERS Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also includes downloadable fighters. The official roster includes DLC characters such as: • Joker • Hero • Banjo & Kazooie • Terry • Byleth • Min Min • Steve • Sephiroth • Pyra / Mythra • Kazuya • Sora DO NOT PICK ONLY FROM A TIER LIST Competitive tier lists can help show tournament trends, but they are not the only way to choose a character. A fighter that fits your instincts is often more useful than a high-ranked character you dislike. HOW TO TEST A FIGHTER Try: • Ground movement • Short hops • Recovery • Neutral attack • Tilts • Aerials • Grab • Shield • Special moves • Basic KO options COMMON CHARACTER-SELECTION MISTAKES • Switching characters after every loss • Picking only based on tier lists • Ignoring recovery • Learning too many fighters at once • Practicing advanced combos before fundamentals • Choosing a character you do not enjoy using QUICK CHARACTER CHECKLIST 1. Decide whether you prefer speed, power or range. 2. Test several fighters. 3. Check recovery. 4. Learn basic attacks. 5. Learn one reliable KO option. 6. Practice neutral. 7. Play real matches. 8. Stick with one fighter long enough to learn them. Smash Ultimate has a large roster, so choosing a main should be based on playstyle and comfort rather than one permanent ranking.
