# Onimusha: Way of the Sword Combat Guide
Miyamoto Musashi fights the demonic Genma using sword techniques, defensive timing, and supernatural powers provided by the Oni Gauntlet. The combat system rewards understanding different defensive techniques rather than repeatedly relying on standard attacks.
## Basic Sword Attacks
On PlayStation 5, Square performs a light sword attack and Triangle performs a heavy attack. These are documented controls in PlayStation's official hands-on report.
Learn the difference between quick attacks and heavier strikes before attempting advanced counters. Attack openings become particularly important against enemies capable of punishing repeated aggression.
## Parry
Press L1 at the moment an incoming attack connects to execute a timed parry.
Successful parries improve Musashi's sword attacks and create offensive opportunities. Rather than guarding continuously, practice identifying an enemy's attack animation and timing the defensive input.
A parry is especially valuable when the enemy is about to enter close combat range.
## Deflect
Press L1 together with X to execute the documented deflection technique.
Deflecting damages an opponent's stamina and can leave them off balance. This provides a different advantage from a parry: it helps set up a stamina break instead of merely increasing the strength of subsequent attacks.
## Issen Counter and Break Issen
An Issen counter is a precisely timed offensive response when an enemy is about to strike. PlayStation describes it as a difficult, high-risk technique capable of major damage.
Break Issen is related to exhausting the opponent's stamina. Once the enemy's stamina is depleted, an opening appears for a powerful execution.
Do not confuse these two mechanics. One depends on offensive timing; the other takes advantage of a broken enemy.
The exact button sequence for the Issen counter is not specified here because it has not been independently confirmed.
## Oni Gauntlet and Oni Armament
The Oni Gauntlet absorbs souls left behind by defeated enemies. Once sufficiently powered, it can release an Oni Armament attack.
PlayStation documents R1 as the Oni Armament input in its hands-on demonstration.
Soul absorption is therefore important to combat progression, not simply an optional visual effect.
## Practical Combat Approach
Start by learning normal sword attacks. Practice parrying individual enemies, then experiment with deflection and stamina depletion.
Against demanding opponents, avoid assuming that every attack must be answered with the same defensive move.
Use defensive timing to create openings, exploit broken stamina when available, and preserve powered Oni attacks for appropriate moments.
The Sasaki Ganryu encounter described in PlayStation's hands-on report demonstrates how parrying, deflection, stamina pressure and soul-powered attacks work together.
