Plan during your turn, react during theirs

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combines turn-based decisions with timed actions. Skills can include timing prompts, while enemy attacks require real-time defensive responses. Take time to read a skill before selecting it, then watch the action once it begins.

Start with a repeatable defensive goal

Sandfall’s demonstration describes dodging as having a wider timing window than parrying. Parrying an entire enemy combo can produce a counterattack. On the PlayStation controls shown in that demonstration, Circle dodges and R1 parries; confirm your current bindings if you have remapped controls.

GetCheatBeacon recommends learning one enemy sequence at a time. Notice the wind-up, delayed strike and number of hits. Try to evade that same sequence reliably before attempting the tighter parry timing. Do not let a successful response to the first hit distract you from the rest of the combo.

Use free aim for a specific reason

The developer demonstrates shooting enemy weak points and encounter objects with free aim. When a boss seems unusually resistant or strongly supported, inspect what else is present instead of assuming a larger damage number is the only solution.

Read the turn order before committing

GetCheatBeacon advice: compare the next enemy action with your party’s condition. Decide whether you need a recovery turn or can safely set up an attack. If an attempt fails, identify whether the problem was a poor decision before the action or a missed timing prompt during it.

A useful practice record

  • Which enemy animation caused the failure?
  • Was the response early, late or aimed at the wrong hit?
  • Did you spend the turn preparing for an attack that never became safe?
  • Would a more reliable defensive response have preserved the attempt?

Keep the observation precise. “I missed the delayed second strike” gives you a clearer next attempt than “this enemy is impossible.”
