UFC 5 Takedown Defense: Denial Input, Timing & Drive Direction

UFC 5 distinguishes an early takedown denial from defending a drive after a late response. Learn the trigger input first, then the directional adjustment.

Basic denial input

Xbox default input: hold RT + LT when the opponent attempts the takedown. These are the two triggers pressed together, not a sequence of taps. EA's takedown-denial tutorial uses these Xbox button labels. On another platform or a remapped layout, check the equivalent action in the current controls screen.

Respond to a late denial

EA's timing guide explains that a quick response can produce a dominant clinch position. A late denial can become a drive in which the attacker changes direction. Keep holding the denial triggers and match that direction with the left stick. The direction is the drive you are defending, not a fixed up or down input for every attempt.

Understand the cost of anticipating

The official pre-emptive-denial lesson recommends holding the denial input early for difficult reversal timing, but warns that doing so drops your fighter's hands. Do not remain in that defense automatically while the opponent is still striking.

Practice in two stages

  1. Have a partner attempt a predictable takedown from a fixed range.
  2. Concentrate on recognizing the start and holding both triggers.
  3. Repeat with a deliberately later response so you recognize the drive state.
  4. Watch and match a directional change while maintaining the denial input.
  5. Finally mix takedowns with strikes so anticipation becomes a decision.

Diagnose the failure

Check whether you missed the attempt, released a trigger or moved the stick against the wrong drive direction. Keep the same fighters and distance while learning the cue. This is the basic denial and drive procedure, not a guarantee that every special takedown or reversal has identical timing.
