Gran Turismo 7 Tuning Guide: Suspension, Gearing & Car Setup
Gran Turismo 7 tuning is most useful when you are solving a specific handling problem. The Tuning Shop provides performance parts across Sports, Club Sports, Semi-Racing, Racing and Extreme categories, while Car Settings lets you install parts, choose tires and fine-tune supported adjustments.
Start With the Event Rules
Before modifying a car, check the event requirements.
Gran Turismo 7 may restrict:
- Performance Points.
- Tire types.
- Car category.
- Tuning availability.
Do not build a car past the limits of the race you actually want to enter.
Performance Points
GT7 uses Performance Points as one indicator of overall vehicle performance.
Upgrades and setup changes can affect PP.
The goal is not always to create the highest PP possible. It is to create the fastest and most controllable car that remains eligible for the event.
Tires First
Tires directly affect available grip.
The correct tire choice depends on:
- Event restrictions.
- Weather.
- Race length.
- Tire wear.
Do not attempt to solve a fundamental grip problem only through suspension tuning if the tire is wrong for the conditions.
Suspension
Suspension adjustments affect how the car responds to braking, cornering, bumps and weight transfer.
If the car is unstable, identify when the problem happens:
- Corner entry.
- Mid-corner.
- Corner exit.
- Over bumps.
- Under braking.
That information is more useful than changing several suspension settings at random.
Understeer
Understeer occurs when the car turns less than you want and pushes toward the outside of the corner.
Before tuning, make sure the problem is not simply excessive entry speed.
No suspension adjustment can fully compensate for repeatedly entering a corner far too fast.
Oversteer
Oversteer occurs when the rear of the car rotates more than intended.
Check whether it happens:
- When braking.
- When turning in.
- When applying throttle.
The cause determines which adjustment is relevant.
Gearing
Transmission setup determines how engine power is distributed across the speed range.
Shorter gearing can improve acceleration but may reduce useful maximum speed. Longer gearing can support higher speeds but may make acceleration weaker.
Tune gearing to the track.
Do Not Tune Only for Top Speed
A circuit with many slow corners may reward acceleration more than theoretical maximum speed.
A track with very long straights may require different ratios.
Traction Control
GT7 allows Traction Control adjustment from the assistance settings and during driving through the Multi-Function Display.
The official manual notes that higher Traction Control reduces wheelspin but can hurt corner-exit speed.
Use enough assistance to keep the car manageable without assuming the highest setting is automatically fastest.
ABS
GT7 also lets you adjust ABS behavior.
The Default setting manages braking while retaining some steering grip, while more advanced settings reduce intervention.
Beginners should establish consistent braking before removing assistance purely because experienced drivers use different settings.
Differential
Differential tuning affects how driven wheels behave relative to one another under acceleration, deceleration and cornering.
If differential settings are available for your car, change them only after identifying whether the problem occurs on throttle, off throttle or during transition.
Aerodynamics
Cars with adjustable downforce can trade straight-line efficiency for additional high-speed grip.
The ideal setting depends on the circuit.
Save Settings Sheets
GT7 allows multiple Settings Sheets.
Use them.
Maintain different versions such as:
- Baseline setup.
- High-downforce circuit setup.
- High-speed setup.
- PP-limited event setup.
This prevents you from losing a working tune while experimenting.
Change One Variable at a Time
If you alter suspension, gearing, differential and tires simultaneously, you will not know which change actually improved the car.
A better method:
- Save a baseline setup.
- Run several consistent laps.
- Identify one problem.
- Change one relevant setting.
- Run the same test again.
- Keep or revert the adjustment based on the result.
Use Time Trial
Time Trial gives you a repeatable environment for tuning.
Focus not only on the fastest single lap but also whether the car becomes easier to drive consistently.
Common Tuning Mistakes
- Changing several settings simultaneously.
- Ignoring event PP limits.
- Tuning around the wrong tires.
- Trying to fix excessive driving speed with setup changes.
- Building only for top speed.
- Copying another tune without understanding what problem it was designed to solve.
Bottom Line
Gran Turismo 7 tuning should make a car easier and faster for a specific track or event. Start with the correct tires, establish a baseline, identify one handling problem and adjust only the systems connected to that problem. Repeatable testing produces better setups than changing every slider at once.
