Decide what help you want
Choose whether the companion is primarily supporting the current fight, carrying extra supplies or joining you for their story. Keep the trip and mode in mind rather than assuming one companion is best for every objective.
Use Trade to inspect the inventory
The GamesRadar guide describes opening a companion's Trade menu and transferring items. Review what is actually on each side before leaving. Keep anything you need to use immediately on your own character rather than handing away the whole recovery plan.
Equip eligible gear explicitly
The same guide distinguishes giving a companion an item from selecting the available Equip prompt for usable equipment. Check that prompt and the result. Do not assume every clothing piece or weapon works on every companion, particularly non-human companions.
Use a publisher-backed example carefully
GamesRadar reports Bethesda UK community manager guidance showing Dogmeat can equip certain accessories through Trade and Equip. That specific example does not prove every accessory fits or that appearance automatically changes combat performance.
Review before dismissing or changing plans
Check the inventory and your intended next destination before leaving a companion behind. If behavior differs, consider the selected difficulty, quest situation and installed modifications before using a console command. This page does not claim unlimited carrying capacity, universal immortality or an exact affinity exploit.
