Helldivers 2 Friendly Fire Guide: Stratagem Safety & Squad Positioning
Friendly fire is a deliberate part of Helldivers 2. PlayStation and Arrowhead both emphasize that bullets, explosives, sentries, mines and Stratagems can kill fellow Helldivers. Good squads do not eliminate friendly fire completely—they manage the risk.
Know Your Firing Lane
Before firing past a teammate, ask whether they may move into the shot.
Maintain separation so squad members are not constantly crossing the same line of fire.
Do Not Stand Directly Behind Teammates
If the player ahead retreats suddenly, both players can collide or fire into one another’s path.
Use staggered positions instead.
Call Out Large Stratagems
Before throwing a dangerous Eagle or Orbital beacon near teammates, communicate.
Even a short warning gives the squad time to leave the impact area.
Watch the Beacon
Once a Stratagem has been called, treat the marked area as dangerous.
Do not run toward enemies simply because they are standing close to your own incoming bombardment.
Eagle Strikes
Eagle Stratagems deploy quickly.
That speed means teammates have less time to react.
Throw them far enough from the squad that the strike path does not overlap friendly positions.
Orbital Attacks
Orbital Stratagems can create extremely dangerous zones.
Use them where:
- Enemies are concentrated.
- Teammates have room to retreat.
- The objective will not force everyone into the blast area.
Sentries
Sentries do not understand your desire to stand between the turret and its target.
Place them so their likely firing arc does not cross the center of the squad position.
Place Sentries to the Side
A side or elevated firing position often gives a turret useful coverage without forcing teammates to fight directly in front of it.
Mines
Mines remain dangerous after placement.
Do not scatter them across routes the squad will need for:
- Retreat.
- Objective movement.
- Extraction.
Tesla and Area Defenses
Area-denial defenses can affect Helldivers too.
Give them enough space that teammates do not need to pass through the danger zone.
Explosive Weapons
Explosive Support Weapons require extra awareness.
Do not fire when:
- A teammate is fighting the target at close range.
- The target is directly beside the squad.
- The blast could trigger nearby explosives.
Grenades
Check the target area before throwing.
A grenade that kills one enemy and one teammate is usually a poor trade when the enemy could have been handled safely another way.
Reinforcement Drops
A returning Helldiver’s Hellpod can also cause damage.
Do not deliberately steer onto teammates.
If using the pod offensively against a large enemy, make sure the squad knows what you are attempting.
Supply Drops
Pods and called equipment land with force.
Do not stand directly under the beacon while waiting for supplies or support equipment.
Crossfire
Two Helldivers firing from opposite sides of an enemy can accidentally shoot through the target into each other.
Prefer angles that create overlapping pressure without creating direct crossfire.
Retreat Together
Friendly fire increases when one player retreats through teammates who are still firing.
Call the retreat and move in the same direction where practical.
Dive Out of Danger
PlayStation specifically highlights diving as a way to escape accidental Stratagems and sentry fire.
If a friendly beacon lands beside you, move immediately rather than waiting to see what arrives.
Friendly-Fire Routine
- Maintain separate firing lanes.
- Announce dangerous Stratagems.
- Place sentries away from squad movement routes.
- Keep explosives away from close-range teammates.
- Mark or remember minefields.
- Move together when retreating.
- Dive immediately when a friendly attack lands too close.
Common Friendly-Fire Mistakes
- Throwing an Eagle beacon into a melee fight.
- Placing a sentry behind the squad.
- Creating mines across the escape route.
- Firing explosive weapons past teammates.
- Standing under supply drops.
- Creating crossfire from opposite sides of the same enemy.
Bottom Line
Friendly fire is part of Helldivers 2’s combat system, but repeated team kills are usually a positioning problem. Control firing lanes, communicate before large Stratagems, place automated defenses carefully and always leave teammates a safe route away from your firepower.
