Horizon Forbidden West Machine Guide: Scan, Tag & Harvest Components

Decide whether the hunt is for a machine defeat or a particular component. The best way to finish the fight is not always the best way to preserve the part an upgrade requires.

Scan before committing

Guerrilla's guidance describes the Focus identifying machine resources and tagging components. PlayStation also recommends cataloging machines' weaknesses, carried parts and locations. Read the particular component entry instead of assuming every glowing part serves the same purpose.

Choose the first target

Identify the component you need and a position from which you can see it. Compare an attack that removes the part with one intended primarily to deal damage. Keep the target visible rather than spending expensive ammunition on a poorly exposed angle.

Check the loot rules for your settings

Guerrilla explains that some resources can be lost if they remain attached when a machine dies. Easy Loot changes collection behavior for eligible attached components and is enabled by default on Story and Easy or selectable under Custom. Read the component's own information; this is not a guarantee that every destroyed part will be restored.

Keep control of the encounter

  1. Observe the machine and nearby threats.
  2. Tag the component you are targeting.
  3. Choose suitable ammunition from the loadout you actually carry.
  4. Reposition when the part is hidden rather than firing blindly.
  5. Confirm the desired part was collected after the fight.

Use each hunt to improve the next

If the component did not drop, review whether you targeted the correct part, destroyed it or relied on different loot settings. Keep that diagnosis separate from whether the machine itself was defeated. A short, accurate note saves more resources than repeating the same unsuccessful hunt.
