Marvel Rivals Positioning Guide: Roles, Cover, Angles & Objective Control

Marvel Rivals gives heroes extreme mobility and powerful abilities, but positioning still determines whether those abilities create value. The correct position depends on your hero, role, objective and the location of both teams.

Position for the Objective

Before choosing an angle, identify what your team is trying to accomplish.

You may need to:

  • Attack an objective.
  • Defend one.
  • Escort progress.
  • Stop an enemy push.

Do Not Position Only for Damage

An angle that produces damage but leaves the objective completely uncontested may not be useful.

Use Cover

Cover gives you time to:

  • Recover.
  • Wait for cooldowns.
  • Break enemy line of sight.
  • Choose when to re-enter the fight.

Destructible Terrain Changes Safety

Marvel Rivals officially features destructible battlefields.

A wall or structure that protects you early in a fight may later disappear.

Always know where the next piece of cover is.

Vanguard Positioning

Vanguards generally help establish the team's front line.

Good positions allow you to:

  • Threaten the objective.
  • Block or discourage enemy movement.
  • Remain reachable by your Strategists.

Do Not Push Beyond Support Range

If the team cannot see or assist you, durability disappears quickly against several opponents.

Duelist Positioning

Duelists often want an angle that lets them pressure important targets without being attacked by the entire enemy team simultaneously.

Useful positions may include:

  • Side angles.
  • High ground.
  • Short flanks.
  • Positions behind Vanguard pressure.

Do Not Turn Every Side Angle Into a Deep Flank

A small off-angle can pressure the opponent while keeping you close enough to return to the team.

A deep flank may remove you from the fight for too long.

Strategist Positioning

Strategists need enough visibility to support teammates while staying difficult for enemy Duelists to reach.

Look for positions with:

  • Cover.
  • Clear lines toward teammates.
  • More than one escape route.

Do Not Stand Directly Beside the Front Line Without a Reason

If a Strategist becomes the easiest target in the fight, the rest of the team may quickly lose support.

High Ground

High ground can provide:

  • Better sightlines.
  • Safer firing angles.
  • More difficult enemy approaches.

High Ground Is Not Automatically Safe

Marvel Rivals contains heroes with extensive mobility.

Expect enemies to reach positions that would be inaccessible in a traditional grounded shooter.

Use Hero Mobility

Official developer material emphasizes full 3D combat and hero-specific mobility.

Use movement powers to:

  • Reach alternate angles.
  • Escape pressure.
  • Return to teammates.
  • Challenge vertical threats.

Preserve an Escape Route

Do not spend every movement ability entering the fight if you will immediately need one to survive.

Crossfire

Your team becomes harder to defend against when enemies cannot face every threat from one direction.

Create different angles without becoming isolated.

Line of Sight

Many support and attack abilities require clear access to the target.

Before pushing around a corner, ask whether your teammates can still interact with you.

Do Not Break Friendly Sightlines Unnecessarily

A Vanguard moving one corner too far may accidentally block their own Strategist from helping.

Objective Positioning

Standing directly in the center of an objective is not always the only useful position.

Nearby cover or angles may let you control access while still influencing the objective fight.

When the Enemy Uses an Ultimate

Positioning should change immediately when a major enemy ability creates danger.

Depending on the ability, you may need to:

  • Spread out.
  • Move behind cover.
  • Leave an area temporarily.
  • Counter with your own team utility.

Do Not Stack Without a Reason

Several teammates occupying the same tiny space may allow one area attack to pressure the entire team.

Regrouping

After losing several teammates, retreat when practical.

Maintaining a heroic-looking position alone often delays the regroup and gives the enemy another elimination.

Position After Winning a Fight

Once your team gains control:

  • Take useful space.
  • Set up cover.
  • Watch likely enemy return routes.
  • Keep enough connection to the objective.

Do Not Chase to the Enemy Spawn

The farther you chase, the farther your team may be from its own objective and support structure.

Positioning Routine

  1. Identify the objective.
  2. Choose cover appropriate to your role.
  3. Maintain useful teammate sightlines.
  4. Create an angle without becoming isolated.
  5. Keep an escape route.
  6. Adjust when terrain is destroyed.
  7. Regroup instead of feeding staggered fights.

Common Positioning Mistakes

  • Vanguards pushing beyond support range.
  • Duelists spending too long on deep flanks.
  • Strategists standing in the open.
  • Treating destructible cover as permanent.
  • Using all mobility to enter with no way out.
  • Continuing to fight alone after teammates die.

Bottom Line

Marvel Rivals positioning is role-dependent. Vanguards create space, Duelists create pressure angles and Strategists stay connected to the team from safer positions. Use cover and vertical movement, preserve escape routes and keep repositioning as the destructible battlefield changes.
