Use roles as responsibilities
Helm, repairs, pressure and lookout are suggested jobs, not fixed character classes. Choose a starting split suited to the crew you have, then allow it to change. A small crew must combine jobs instead of pretending it can cover every task with a different player.
Keep supplies connected to the job
Rare documents wooden planks for repairing the ship and food for recovering health. Check that the person doing a job can reach what it needs. Ship storage and personal readiness are related but different: supplies elsewhere are not the same as supplies ready in hand.
Make navigation calls actionable
The player deciding direction should give the crew enough notice to prepare for the next maneuver or destination. The lookout should report where a threat is relative to the ship and whether it is approaching, rather than shouting a name without a direction.
Hand off urgent work explicitly
If a player leaves the vessel or must recover, say which task needs covering. The remaining crew should agree on the most urgent action instead of assuming someone else took over. Temporary role changes are normal when the situation changes.
Restock before the next commitment
Rare describes supply crates as a way to move larger quantities, at the cost of carrying the crate. Use an available restocking opportunity before the next voyage leg. Review a failed encounter by asking which task was left uncovered rather than assigning a permanent blame role.
