Red Dead Online Roles Guide: Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector & More
Specialist Roles are Red Dead Online's career-style progression paths. Each Role gives you themed activities, Role XP, ranks, unique skills, equipment, clothing, horses, and new ways to earn rewards.
You are not locked into a single Role. Rockstar allows players to progress through several Roles at the same time, so the best choice depends on what kind of gameplay you enjoy.
Bounty Hunter
Bounty Hunter is the most combat-focused of the major Roles. Licensed Bounty Hunters take assignments from Bounty Boards located around the world.
Targets vary from individual criminals to heavily defended groups. Difficult bounties can be easier with a Posse, and Rockstar notes that returning a target alive earns a greater reward.
Bounty Hunter Progression Includes
- Reinforced Lasso
- Bolas
- Bounty Wagon
- Improved Eagle Eye tracking abilities
- Additional satchel capacity
- Mounted defensive techniques
- Weapon-spinning skills
The Prestigious Bounty Hunter License extends the Role with additional ranks, items, skills, and Infamous Bounty targets.
Best for: players who enjoy combat, tracking, pursuits, and repeatable mission objectives.
Trader
Trader turns your Camp into a commercial operation with Cripps. You provide animal materials, Cripps converts those materials into goods, and you sell the finished product through deliveries.
Trader Progression Includes
- Medium Delivery Wagon
- Large Delivery Wagon
- Hunting Wagon
- Weapons Locker
- Stew Pot
- Ingredient and material satchel upgrades
- Improved material efficiency from perfect carcasses
The Role becomes more effective as you improve transportation and material gathering.
Best for: hunters and players who like running a production-and-delivery business.
Collector
Collector is built around exploration and finding valuable objects throughout the frontier.
The Role works especially well for players who enjoy traveling, searching, and combining exploration with other activities. Rockstar's own Role tips note that collectibles can sometimes be found while completing Bounty Hunter activities, making Collector particularly easy to combine with another Role.
Best for: exploration-focused players who enjoy searching the world rather than constant combat.
Moonshiner
Moonshiner is a business Role centered around owning and operating a Moonshine Shack. It includes production, recipes, business upgrades, story-related activities, and a customizable property.
Rockstar positions Moonshiner as a natural extension of Trader progression. Eligible Traders can be introduced to the business after progressing far enough in the Trader path.
Moonshiner Progression Can Unlock
- Still upgrades
- Moonshine recipes
- Bar expansion
- Band expansion
- Role-specific equipment
- Faster production through Master Distiller progression
Best for: players who like business management and want a permanent property tied to their Role.
Naturalist
Naturalist focuses on wildlife and provides another progression path built around the animals of the frontier. It differs from Trader because its activities center on studying and interacting with wildlife rather than simply converting animals into Trader materials.
Best for: players who enjoy wildlife-focused exploration and want an alternative to the Trader hunting loop.
Can You Have More Than One Role?
Yes. Red Dead Online is designed so that you can progress several Roles. You can focus heavily on one or advance multiple Roles naturally as you travel.
This creates useful combinations:
- Bounty Hunter + Collector: search defeated enemies and locations for collectibles while pursuing targets.
- Trader + Moonshiner: operate two business-oriented progression paths.
- Trader + Collector: hunt and gather materials while traveling through collectible areas.
Which Role Should You Choose First?
Choose based on the activity you will actually repeat:
- Choose Bounty Hunter if you want action and combat.
- Choose Trader if you enjoy hunting and running a business.
- Choose Collector if exploration is your priority.
- Choose Moonshiner if you want a property-based business after establishing progression.
- Choose Naturalist if wildlife-focused gameplay appeals to you.
How Role Ranks Work
Completing Role activities earns Role XP. As you rank up, you unlock new items, abilities, skills, and equipment associated with that career.
Rockstar divides standard Role progression into tiers, with new unlocks appearing as you advance. Do not buy every unlock automatically; prioritize the equipment that improves your actual Role activities.
Bottom Line
There is no single best Red Dead Online Role for everyone. Bounty Hunter emphasizes action, Trader emphasizes hunting and commerce, Collector emphasizes exploration, Moonshiner expands the business side of the game, and Naturalist focuses on wildlife. Pick the activity you enjoy most first, then add complementary Roles so normal travel and missions progress more than one career at a time.
