Find the playing-style option
Rockstar's update notes place Playing Style in the Player menu's Online Options. Defensive signals a preference to avoid aggressive player interactions. Check the selected state before beginning Free Roam activity rather than assuming a previous session or another mode left it unchanged.
Understand the documented protections
Rockstar describes reduced damage, lock-on restrictions and protection from lassoing, tackling and execution while Defensive is active. Those benefits do not mean total invulnerability. Continue watching the surroundings and keep a route away from a hostile encounter.
Account for mission differences
The same notes explain that some Free Roam interactions are restricted and fewer PvP-oriented missions are offered. If an activity is unavailable, check whether its rules conflict with the selected style before assuming the mission is broken.
Avoid aggressive behavior that changes the state
Rockstar documents increased Hostility and leaving Defensive after aggression against players who are not highly hostile, along with entry restrictions for highly hostile players. Read the current status after a confrontation rather than assuming the shield remains active throughout every action.
Choose de-escalation when it serves the goal
If the purpose is a quiet journey or ordinary activity, leaving a hostile area may be more useful than retaliating. This guide uses publisher rules and does not promise immunity, an exact damage-reduction percentage or access to every Free Roam event.
