Name the problem before buying
Ask what stops your hero doing its job. Are you unable to reach a target, dying before casting, running out of resources or surviving without contributing enough damage? Those are different problems. Compare an item with the problem it actually addresses rather than its popularity alone.
Plan around a usable purchase
Consider what the next completed item allows the team to attempt. Tell teammates when you are close to an important purchase before they commit to a fight. If reaching it requires more farming, compare the time needed with the objective the enemy can take during that delay.
Adapt the recommended build
Valve describes Plus Assistant suggestions that account for lane, hero lineups and purchased items, with a recalculate option after your inventory changes. This is part of the paid Dota Plus service. Treat a suggestion as an option to assess; a subscription is not necessary to think through an item choice.
Compare alternatives in the shop
Read the current item description, including active effects, restrictions and components. A defensive purchase is useful only if it addresses the damage or control you are facing and you can use it in time. Do not assume an item makes you immune to every effect.
Review the decision after a fight
Identify whether the purchase arrived too late, solved the wrong threat or was never activated. Practice using an unfamiliar active before relying on it under pressure. This guide does not prescribe a permanent patch-independent build, price or purchase minute.
