Brawl Stars Upgrade Guide: Gadgets, Star Powers, Gears, Hypercharges & Buffies
Choose a small working roster
Upgrade a Brawler you enjoy and can use reliably before spending across the entire roster. Next, add a different play style: a longer-range option for open maps, an area-control option for objectives, and a close-range option for maps with cover. This is a planning framework, not a claim that one Brawler or build is best in every patch.
Understand the unlock milestones
Gadgets become usable at Power Level 7. The two Gear slots unlock at Power Levels 8 and 10. Star Powers become usable at Power Level 9. Hypercharges become usable at Power Level 11, after that Brawler’s Hypercharge is unlocked. A reward can unlock equipment before your Brawler reaches its usable level, so check the equipment screen before buying something again.
Equip one Gadget and one Star Power. The two choices shown on a Brawler page are alternatives; they are not both active at once. Choose your two Gears for the map and your play style. Common options cover low-health damage, regeneration, shields, bush movement, visibility after hits, and Gadget cooldown reduction.
Gadgets use cooldowns
Current Gadgets are not limited to three activations per match. They use individual cooldowns. Keep a defensive Gadget ready when an enemy can engage; use a zoning or mobility Gadget when it creates space your team can actually use. Do not copy a cooldown from an old video or guide: reworks and balance updates can change both the effect and timing.
Hypercharges change the Super
Read the specific effect rather than treating Hypercharge as only a damage boost. A larger area, extra summon, returning projectile or altered movement can change the best timing for your Super. Coordinate it with the objective and your teammates. Hypercharge availability depends on the Brawler; an absent entry is not proof that one exists.
Buffies are additional upgrades
Buffies add effects to a Brawler’s existing Gadgets, Star Powers and Hypercharge. They do not replace the need to choose and equip the underlying ability. Buffies become usable after reaching 1,000 account Trophies. The current system includes gameplay Buffies and a cosmetic Bling Buffie; the cosmetic item does not improve combat statistics. Not every Brawler receives Buffies in the same update.
On this site, read the ordinary Gadget or Star Power first, then its Buffie entry. For example, Crow’s reworked Instapoison detonates poison and grants a shield; its Buffie adds a poison-duration refresh. Those effects should not be merged into the base Gadget description.
Spend with a purpose
Before an upgrade, ask which match situation it improves. If your losses come from poor positioning, an expensive equipment purchase will not fix that by itself. Practice with the kit, understand the map, then spend on equipment you will use. Avoid spreading resources so widely that none of your preferred Brawlers has a usable build.
Check the patch and source
Numbers can vary with power level and balance changes. This reference uses qualitative effects when an official source does not establish current numerical scaling. Brawl Arena and temporary events can have separate rules; do not apply those modifiers to ordinary Trophy matches.
