Brawl Stars Beginner Guide: Brawlers, Upgrades, Modes & Progression

Brawl Stars combines short team matches with long-term Brawler progression. The current progression system includes Trophy Road, Brawler Blast, Brawler Boxes, Brawl Pass rewards, Coins and Power Points.

Learn a Small Group of Brawlers First

Each Brawler has a different:

  • Attack pattern.
  • Range.
  • Movement style.
  • Super.
  • Role within a team.

Do not try to master the entire roster immediately.

Test Brawlers Before Committing Resources

Supercell's current unlocking system gives players ways to preview and unlock Brawlers through progression systems.

Before investing heavily, make sure you actually enjoy:

  • The Brawler's range.
  • Attack timing.
  • Super.
  • Normal role in a match.

Brawler Blast

Supercell currently uses Brawler Blast as its Credit-based Brawler unlocking system.

When enough Credits are collected, Brawler Blast presents Brawlers of the relevant rarity and ultimately determines the Brawler you unlock from the available set.

Brawler Boxes

Newly released Brawlers can also be tied to Brawler Box events.

Supercell states that these events can temporarily let you play the new Brawler while earning Boxes toward unlocking them.

Trophy Road

Trophy progression provides rewards and can unlock specific Brawlers or choices between Brawlers at certain milestones.

Keep playing different Brawlers rather than abandoning progression after one difficult matchup.

Coins

Supercell's current support documentation states that Coins are used for Brawler upgrades and systems including:

  • Gadgets.
  • Gears.
  • Hypercharges.
  • Star Powers.

Power Points

Power Points work with Coins to upgrade unlocked Brawlers.

Spend them on Brawlers you actually use instead of spreading early resources evenly across the entire roster.

Brawl Pass XP

Brawl Pass XP progresses the seasonal reward tracks.

Supercell currently lists sources including:

  • Quests.
  • Game activity.
  • Other supported progression actions.

Use the Free Track

The Brawl Pass includes a free reward track available without purchasing the paid Pass.

Claim useful progression resources as they become available.

Learn Game Modes Separately

A Brawler that performs well in one mode may be much harder to use in another.

Learn the objective before judging the Brawler.

Gem Grab

Gem Grab emphasizes:

  • Mid control.
  • Team positioning.
  • Protecting gems.

Showdown

Showdown changes the priorities toward survival, positioning and choosing when to fight.

Objective Modes

Other modes may reward:

  • Area control.
  • Pressure.
  • Team composition.
  • Target priority.

Do Not Judge Progress Only by Eliminations

A useful teammate may provide value through:

  • Controlling space.
  • Protecting an objective.
  • Supporting another Brawler.
  • Preventing enemies from advancing.

Use Cover

Walls and bushes are important tactical tools.

Use them to:

  • Break enemy shots.
  • Approach safely.
  • Control engagement distance.

Ammo Management

Do not fire every shot as soon as ammunition becomes available.

Keeping a shot ready may be more useful when an enemy suddenly pushes your position.

Charge the Super With Purpose

Your Super can change a fight, but do not use it automatically the moment it becomes ready.

Save it for an important objective fight or dangerous enemy when that creates more value.

Upgrade Routine

  1. Choose several Brawlers you enjoy.
  2. Learn their ranges and roles.
  3. Spend Coins and Power Points on frequently used Brawlers.
  4. Collect Trophy Road and Brawl Pass rewards.
  5. Use Brawler Blast and current events to expand the roster.
  6. Learn how each game mode changes your priorities.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Trying to upgrade every Brawler at once.
  • Ignoring the match objective.
  • Firing every shot immediately.
  • Standing in open ground.
  • Using one Brawler the same way in every mode.
  • Ignoring free progression rewards.

Bottom Line

Brawl Stars becomes easier when you narrow your focus. Learn a few Brawlers, spend upgrade resources on characters you actually use and play each mode around its objective. Current systems such as Brawler Blast, Trophy Road and the Brawl Pass gradually expand your roster and resources.
