Identify what must be stopped
Look at the card threatening the tower and the support behind it before committing every defensive option. Choose the part of the attack you need to answer first. Spending several cards on a threat already handled can leave the next lane undefended.
Look for an economical answer
Supercell uses The Log against Goblin Barrel as an example of spending less Elixir than the attack cost. Treat that as an illustration of a positive trade, not a promise that one answer resolves every placement, level difference or supported push.
Preserve another defensive option
Before deploying, check what you will have available afterward. An answer that works once can create a new weakness if it removes your only response to a second threat. Avoid using a key defense merely to make an unimportant opening play.
Counterpush only when it is affordable
After a defense, evaluate whether a surviving card creates a useful opportunity. Adding more resources automatically can erase the advantage you just earned. Keep enough flexibility to answer the opponent rather than chasing tower damage at any cost.
Review the first unnecessary spend
After a lost exchange, find where the extra Elixir went: a late card, duplicate answer or unsupported follow-up. Change that decision before replacing the entire deck. This guide covers standard real-time 1v1 reasoning; Merge Tactics and special modifiers can use different rules.
