Diablo 4 Gear Guide: Affixes, Aspects, Tempering & Masterworking
Diablo 4 gear progression is not just about equipping the item with the largest number. Blizzard has repeatedly expanded itemization through affix changes, the Codex of Power, Tempering, Masterworking, Uniques and Mythic Uniques.
Item Power Is Only One Part of the Decision
A higher item-power piece can provide stronger base stats, but you still need to compare whether its affixes and effects fit your build.
Before replacing an item, compare:
- Base armor or weapon damage.
- Relevant affixes.
- Legendary Aspect.
- Tempering potential.
- Whether the item supports your build.
Affixes
Affixes provide additional stats and bonuses.
The best affixes depend on your build.
Useful categories often include:
- Damage scaling.
- Critical or status-related bonuses.
- Resource support.
- Cooldown reduction.
- Survivability.
- Resistances.
- Movement or utility.
Do Not Chase Every Offensive Stat
Gear with several unrelated damage bonuses may be weaker than an item with fewer but highly relevant affixes.
Legendary Aspects
Legendary Aspects modify skills or provide powerful character effects.
Some Aspects are central enough that losing them can break the way the build functions.
Codex of Power
The Codex of Power provides a way to manage and reuse unlocked Legendary effects.
Use it to preserve important build interactions while replacing weaker gear.
Tempering
Tempering adds additional build-oriented affixes to eligible items.
Use Tempering to make gear more specific to your:
- Main skill.
- Damage type.
- Resource plan.
- Defensive needs.
Masterworking
Masterworking further improves high-value endgame gear.
Save expensive progression for items that are already strong enough to remain in the build.
Uniques
Unique items can provide effects that are not available through normal Legendary gear.
A Unique is valuable when its special effect supports the build.
Do not equip one purely because it is rare.
Mythic Uniques
Mythic Uniques are especially rare and powerful items.
Even then, build fit remains important.
Resistances
Elemental resistance becomes increasingly important in harder content.
Do not sacrifice all defensive balance for offensive affixes.
Armor and Survivability
Survivability comes from several layers.
Your gear should work with:
- Armor.
- Resistances.
- Damage reduction.
- Class-specific defensive systems.
- Defensive Skills.
Weapon Choice
For weapon-based builds, compare more than headline damage.
Check:
- Weapon type.
- Attack speed.
- Build-relevant affixes.
- Legendary or Unique effects.
- Whether your Skills actually use that weapon.
Jewelry
Rings and amulets can be critical because they often carry offensive, resource and utility effects.
Do not treat them as secondary pieces.
Upgrade in Stages
During leveling:
- Replace obviously weak gear.
- Preserve key Legendary effects.
- Avoid overspending on temporary items.
During endgame:
- Look for strong affix combinations.
- Apply useful Tempering.
- Masterwork items worth keeping.
When to Replace an Item
Replace gear when the new item improves the build as a whole.
Ask:
- Does it improve base stats?
- Does it have better relevant affixes?
- Can I keep or replace the required Aspect?
- Does it improve defense or resource stability?
- Is it worth further investment?
Common Gear Mistakes
- Equipping every higher item-power drop automatically.
- Ignoring build-relevant affixes.
- Losing an important Aspect during an upgrade.
- Masterworking gear you intend to replace immediately.
- Ignoring resistances.
- Equipping a Unique that does not fit the build.
Bottom Line
Diablo 4 gear is about synergy. Compare item power, affixes, Aspects and defensive value together, then use Tempering and Masterworking to improve pieces that genuinely fit the build. A slightly lower-number item with the right interactions can be far stronger than a higher-number item with the wrong ones.
