Escape from Tarkov Map & Extraction Guide: Navigation, Landmarks & Exfils
Map knowledge is one of the most important survival skills in Escape from Tarkov. Battlestate Games' official Field Guide includes navigating locations and raid exfils among the game's fundamental systems.
You do not need to memorize an entire location at once. Learn it as a network of landmarks and routes.
Start With One Location
Trying to learn every Tarkov location simultaneously slows progress.
Choose one and learn:
- Major landmarks.
- Common travel corridors.
- Where you tend to spawn.
- How to move toward valid exfil areas.
Orient Immediately After Spawn
When the raid begins, do not start running before you know your general location.
Look for:
- Large buildings.
- Roads.
- Terrain features.
- Walls or fences.
- Industrial structures.
- Other obvious landmarks.
Build a Landmark Chain
Instead of memorizing dozens of turns, remember a sequence.
For example:
- Spawn near Landmark A.
- Move toward Landmark B.
- Use Landmark C to confirm direction.
- Approach the extraction area from a known route.
Check Your Exfils Early
Do not assume the exit you used in a previous raid is automatically the one you need now.
Determine the exits available in the current raid and plan around them.
Plan the Raid Backward
Once you know where you need to leave, ask:
- Which objectives are reasonably on the route?
- Where can useful loot be collected without a major detour?
- Which areas can be avoided if the raid becomes dangerous?
Time Is Part of Navigation
A route that works with plenty of raid time remaining can become dangerous when only a few minutes remain.
Do not wait until the final moments to cross the entire location.
Leave Extra Time When Learning
New players should begin traveling toward extraction earlier because:
- You may take a wrong turn.
- You may encounter enemies.
- You may need to heal.
- You may need to change route.
Learn Safe Movement Routes
The shortest path is not automatically the safest.
When possible, use routes that provide:
- Cover.
- Terrain breaks.
- Several escape options.
- Reduced exposure to long sightlines.
Open Ground
Before crossing an exposed area:
- Stop and listen.
- Check likely firing positions.
- Choose the next piece of cover.
- Cross with a destination rather than wandering in the open.
Buildings
Buildings can provide cover but also concentrate danger.
Before entering:
- Listen.
- Check entrances.
- Know whether you have another way out.
Sound Helps Navigation
Gunfire and movement can tell you where activity is occurring.
If heavy combat is happening directly along your intended route, decide whether:
- You need to pass through it.
- You can wait.
- You can take another path.
Do Not Follow Gunfire Automatically
Your objective is extraction, not investigating every fight on the map.
Navigation After Combat
After a fight, reorient.
Stress and movement can make you lose your original direction.
Find the nearest familiar landmark again before continuing.
Use Repetition
Run the same location repeatedly until you can recognize:
- Several spawn areas.
- Main landmarks.
- Likely routes toward exfil.
- Areas where you frequently become lost.
Do Not Memorize Only Loot Routes
A loot route is useless if you cannot safely navigate away from it.
Learn:
- How to enter the area.
- How to leave.
- Where alternate exits from the area are.
Route Flexibility
Do not force a familiar path when:
- Enemies control it.
- Gunfire blocks it.
- Your health is poor.
- Time is becoming limited.
Extraction Preparation
Before approaching your intended exfil:
- Listen for nearby movement.
- Reload if necessary.
- Heal if practical.
- Approach through useful cover.
Do Not Relax Before the Raid Is Over
Being close to extraction does not mean the remaining route is automatically safe.
Map-Learning Routine
- Choose one location.
- Identify your spawn.
- Check available exfils.
- Pick one major landmark.
- Move toward it using cover.
- Build a chain of recognizable landmarks.
- Begin moving toward extraction early.
- Repeat the same location until orientation becomes automatic.
Common Navigation Mistakes
- Running immediately after spawn without orienting.
- Assuming an old extraction plan applies to every raid.
- Trying to learn all locations at once.
- Waiting too long to move toward exfil.
- Using only the shortest route.
- Following every gunshot.
- Learning loot spots without learning how to leave them.
Bottom Line
Escape from Tarkov map knowledge develops through repetition. Learn one location, identify landmarks, check your current exfils early and plan routes with enough time to recover from mistakes. The map becomes manageable once you stop thinking of it as hundreds of turns and start thinking of it as connected landmarks.
