Pokémon Scarlet Type Matchups: Move Types, Dual Types & Immunities

Evaluate the move's type against the target's current defensive typing. A Pokémon can learn attacks outside its own types, so the species name alone does not tell you whether an incoming move is dangerous.

Begin with a few reliable interactions

Attacking move typeExample target typeOrdinary result
FireGrassSuper effective
WaterFireSuper effective
GrassWaterSuper effective
ElectricGroundNo effect from ordinary type interaction
NormalGhostNo effect from ordinary type interaction

These are introductory examples, not a complete type chart. Abilities and move-specific effects can modify what happens, so read the move description and battle feedback when the result differs.

Check both types

A dual-type target combines the two matchups. For example, an ordinary Electric attack is especially dangerous to a Water/Flying target, while the Ground immunity prevents that same ordinary Electric attack from damaging a Water/Ground target. Do not stop after reading just the first listed type.

Recheck after Terastallization

The target's Tera Type can change the defensive answer. Pokémon's official strategy coverage gives Grass-Tera Heatran as an example that changes its normal Ground and Water weaknesses, and Ghost-Tera Tornadus as an example that avoids Normal-type attacks. Those are mechanical illustrations from older competition coverage, not a claim about the current ranked rules or most popular teams.

Choose coverage rather than repeating one attack type

Inspect the actual moves your party knows. If several members all rely on the same attacking type, a single resistant opponent can limit your options. Add a useful alternative and test it in ordinary battles before rebuilding the whole team.

For applying this to Tera raids and choosing a defender that survives the boss's attacks, continue to the Violet Tera matchup guide. The underlying mechanics apply to both Scarlet and Violet.
