Pokémon Violet Tera Matchups: Offense, Defense & Raid Selection
Choose a Pokémon Violet Tera matchup by separating what damages the target from which attacks your own Pokémon must survive.

Pokémon Violet Tera Matchups: Offense, Defense & Raid Selection
A good Tera matchup answers two questions: which move damages the target effectively, and whether your chosen Pokémon can survive the response. Looking only at the boss's displayed Tera symbol answers only part of that problem.
Identify the Tera Type
A Pokémon's Tera Type is inactive until it Terastallizes. Once it does, reassess the matchup rather than relying on the species' familiar typing. The official Terastal guide uses an Electric-Tera Salamence to show how a different Tera Type can change the battle plan.
Separate attack coverage from defensive typing
Do not assume that a Terastallized opponent only uses moves of its Tera Type. Choose your attack for the target's current typing, then inspect which moves your own Pokémon is vulnerable to. A powerful super-effective attack is not useful if its user repeatedly faints before contributing.
Account for abilities
The official raid tips highlight abilities such as Flash Fire, Sap Sipper and Storm Drain. These can change how a particular move interacts with a target. If a seemingly effective move fails to behave as expected, inspect the ability and move effects before assuming the type chart is wrong.
Use a preparation checklist
- Read the raid's Pokémon and Tera Type.
- Choose an attacking option that fits that defensive type.
- Check whether your Pokémon resists or can withstand the expected attacks.
- Inspect its actual moves, level and ability.
- Coordinate support and attacking roles when playing with a group.
Prepare for the exact event
Nintendo instructs players to download the latest Poké Portal News for limited-time Tera Raid Battles through Mystery Gift, then Check Poké Portal News. Read the current event notice instead of treating an old raid build as a universal answer.
This guide covers ordinary Tera matchup planning. Stellar Tera Type has separate rules and should not be reduced to the same defensive-change shortcut. For introductory type interactions shared by both games, see the Scarlet type matchup guide.
