Terraria Progression & Boss Order: First Day to Moon Lord
Follow Terraria's main boss unlocks, early Hardmode ore tiers and next objectives after Wall of Flesh, mechanical bosses, Plantera and Golem.
Terraria Progression & Boss Order: First Day to Moon Lord
Find your next progression step
- Just started: establish housing, health, mobility and supplies.
- Before Wall of Flesh: prepare the Underworld route and your mining equipment.
- Just entered Hardmode: work through Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum and Adamantite/Titanium equipment, or use the fishing alternative explained below.
- One mechanical boss defeated: finish the other two; one victory alone does not unlock Plantera's Bulbs.
- All three defeated: look for Plantera's Bulbs in the Underground Jungle.
- Plantera defeated: use the Temple Key and prepare Golem.
- Golem defeated: prepare the Cultist, Lunar Events and Moon Lord chain.
The guide below distinguishes main unlocks from recommended preparation. Optional bosses, special seeds, mods and legacy versions can change your route. Use the section matching your current world rather than restarting the whole checklist.
This Terraria progression guide covers the standard route from a new world through Moon Lord on modern Desktop, Console and Mobile versions. It identifies the major unlocks and gives you a next objective at each stage. Special world seeds, mods and legacy editions can change the route.
Terraria progression at a glance
- Build a base and explore for health, equipment and mobility.
- Prepare for Eye of Cthulhu and your world's evil-biome boss.
- Defeat Skeletron for Dungeon access and prepare the Underworld.
- Defeat Wall of Flesh to enter Hardmode.
- Upgrade equipment and defeat The Destroyer, The Twins and Skeletron Prime.
- Break a Plantera's Bulb and defeat Plantera.
- Use the Temple Key to reach Golem.
- Defeat Lunatic Cultist, clear the four Celestial Pillars and fight Moon Lord.
This is a recommended preparation route, not a requirement to defeat every optional boss in this exact order. Terraria allows exploration, fishing and equipment alternatives.
1. First day: shelter, storage and underground exploration
Gather wood, build shelter and create valid NPC housing. Explore nearby caves for ore, chests, Life Crystals and movement accessories. Bring lighting and a return route. Our recommendation is to establish a repeatable base routine: unload materials, improve equipment, check supplies, then explore again.
Use our NPC housing guide if rooms fail Housing Query, and the inventory guide to organize the resources you bring home.
2. Early bosses and evil-biome materials
Eye of Cthulhu is a useful early combat objective once your equipment and movement are ready. For the usual mining route, collect the materials from Eater of Worlds in the Corruption or Brain of Cthulhu and its Creepers in the Crimson. Shadow Scales or Tissue Samples, together with the corresponding ore bars, lead to the Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe.
These pickaxes allow Hellstone mining. This makes the evil-biome stage an important equipment step even though not every early boss is a mandatory gate. Check the Shadow Scale, Brain of Cthulhu and Hellstone mining prerequisites for the relevant materials.
3. Skeletron, the Dungeon and Underworld preparation
Speak to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night and select Curse to summon Skeletron. Defeat him before exploring the deeper Dungeon; entering too far beforehand triggers dangerous Dungeon Guardians. The Old Man's wiki entry explains these conditions.
Explore the Underworld and improve your equipment before starting Wall of Flesh. A Molten Pickaxe is a useful target for the normal early-Hardmode ore route. Our preparation advice is to clear a continuous fighting route and gather healing and combat supplies before summoning the boss. Use the boss preparation guide for arena planning.
4. Wall of Flesh: the Hardmode boundary
Defeating Wall of Flesh changes the world permanently to Hardmode. Stronger enemies and new progression become available. Prepare your base, supplies and exploration routes first rather than expecting the difficulty to stay the same. The boss drops the Pwnhammer used for altar breaking.
After the victory, your next objective is equipment that can handle Hardmode, not an immediate rush to the final bosses. See the Hardmode overview for the world changes.
5. Early Hardmode: ores and equipment
Use the Pwnhammer to break Demon or Crimson Altars and generate the early Hardmode ore tiers. The first cycle produces Cobalt or Palladium, Mythril or Orichalcum, and Adamantite or Titanium. Hardmode fishing crates provide an alternative source of ores and bars; altar breaking is not the only route.
Keep an altar available for recipes that need one. Upgrade mining tools as the next ore tier requires them, and improve weapons, armor and movement before attempting mechanical bosses. Our mining guide explains power versus speed. The wiki's altar page documents ore generation and alternatives.
6. Defeat all three mechanical bosses
The mechanical bosses are The Destroyer, The Twins and Skeletron Prime. You can approach them in the order that suits your equipment; there is no single required first fight. Defeat each at least once in the world to unlock the next main boss stage.
When the trio is complete, Plantera's Bulbs become available in the Underground Jungle. If you cannot find one, confirm that all three victories happened in this world. The mechanical boss unlock list explains this gate.
7. Plantera and the Temple Key
Breaking a Plantera's Bulb summons Plantera in the Underground Jungle. Our recommendation is to prepare nearby movement space before breaking it, so finding the bulb does not start an unplanned fight. Defeating Plantera drops the Temple Key, allowing access to the Jungle Temple.
This is the transition toward Golem. See the Plantera entry for the prerequisite and key drop.
8. Golem in the Jungle Temple
Use the Temple Key to enter the Jungle Temple. At its Lihzahrd Altar, activate the altar while carrying a Lihzahrd Power Cell to summon Golem. The world must be in Hardmode with Plantera defeated. A normal visit to the Temple therefore follows Plantera rather than replacing that progression step.
The Lihzahrd Altar documents the summon conditions. Review your equipment after Golem before starting the final event chain.
9. Lunatic Cultist and the Celestial Pillars
After Golem, the Lunatic Cultist stage is available at the Dungeon entrance. Defeating Lunatic Cultist starts the Lunar Events. Four Celestial Pillars appear: Solar, Vortex, Nebula and Stardust. Defeat the enemies around each pillar to remove its shield, then destroy the pillar.
The Lunatic Cultist and Lunar Events entries describe the chain. Our advice is to prepare your final fighting area and supplies before destroying the last pillar.
10. Moon Lord and what comes afterward
Destroying all four Celestial Pillars triggers Moon Lord's arrival. This is the final boss of the standard progression route, not a reason to stop building or exploring. Afterward, you can work on equipment collections, optional encounters and personal building projects.
If you lose, return to the stage you can reliably clear and improve preparation rather than skipping the unlock requirements. The Moon Lord entry covers the final boss.
Common progression questions
What should I do after Wall of Flesh? Build Hardmode equipment and prepare for the three mechanical bosses.
What comes after the mechanical bosses? Find a Plantera's Bulb in the Underground Jungle after defeating all three in the world.
Is there one exact boss order? The major unlock chain above matters, but optional encounters and equipment choices give you flexibility.
