Basic room requirements

The Official Terraria Wiki specifies at least 60 and fewer than 750 total tiles, including the frame. A valid room needs suitable background walls, a valid standing area and furniture covering light, surface, comfort and entrance requirements. Natural unsafe walls do not count as suitable background walls.

A simple starting room

Use an enclosed rectangular frame with placed background walls. A torch, workbench, chair and door provide an easy-to-understand furnishing set. Count the outer frame when measuring the room; a 10-by-6 outer rectangle has 60 total tiles. Leave the interior usable rather than filling it with solid blocks.

Use Housing Query

Open the housing menu using the house icon above the armor slots. Select Housing Query and use it inside the room. Read the returned message before changing anything.

  1. If the room is too small, recheck the frame dimensions.
  2. If walls are missing or unsuitable, inspect the background wall layer.
  3. If furniture is missing, check the named category.
  4. If the room is otherwise invalid, inspect standing space and nearby evil-biome conditions.
  5. Run the query again after each change.

Suitable does not mean every NPC is unlocked

Our troubleshooting recommendation is to separate room validity from the resident’s arrival conditions. When a room passes the query but stays empty, check the particular NPC’s requirements rather than repeatedly rebuilding a valid structure.

Plan a small neighborhood

Keep a spare room ready near facilities you use often. Test each room independently in a larger building, and reserve clear routes between shops and storage. Once the basic housing works, decide whether convenience or a decorative district matters more for your next expansion.

After changing the building

Run the query again when you alter walls, floors or furniture. Cosmetic edits can change a room’s usable structure. Keeping one known working room nearby helps you compare a failed design with a successful one.
