Tears of the Kingdom Depths Guide: Lightroots, Brightblooms & Gloom

Enter the Depths with a lighting plan and a way to respond to Gloom damage. Darkness makes it harder to judge both the route and the cost of a detour.

Bring light you can place

Nintendo recommends Brightbloom Seeds, found in caves and wells. Throwing one or attaching it to an arrow creates light on impact. Use that light to inspect a landing or the next section of ground before committing to it.

Search for Lightroots with the map

Surface Shrines of Light have corresponding Lightroots directly below them. Compare the surface and Depths maps to set a candidate destination. The position is a navigation clue; you still need to find a route through the terrain between you and it.

Understand Gloom recovery

Gloom can reduce the available heart meter while you are below ground. Nintendo lists Sundelion meals and resting beneath activated Lightroots as ways to restore Gloom-damaged hearts; returning to the surface or sky also restores the meter. Restoring the damaged capacity is different from assuming every ordinary food item solves the problem.

Explore between known safe points

  1. Choose a Lightroot or visible landmark as the next goal.
  2. Illuminate the approach in short sections.
  3. Avoid detours that consume your remaining recovery supplies.
  4. Return to a known position when the next route is unclear.

Keep the return decision tied to the supplies and usable hearts you have now. Finding an interesting object does not require continuing farther into unknown ground on the same trip.

Separate scouting from fighting

Observe a camp or large enemy before entering its reach. If your purpose is mapping a route, mark the encounter and continue around it where possible. Come back prepared for that fight rather than allowing every discovery to become an unplanned resource test.

For planning journeys across all three layers, see the surface, sky and Depths exploration guide.
