Stardew Valley Fishing Guide: Controls, Training Rod & Fish Locations
How to catch your first fish
Hold Use Tool to charge the cast and release it to send the line out. When a bite appears, press Use Tool to begin the minigame. Keep the fish icon inside the green bar until the catch meter fills. Holding raises the bar; releasing lets it descend. Brief presses give finer control than holding continuously.
Our practice suggestion is to watch the centre of the green bar rather than chase every sudden fish movement. Try a short set of casts and identify whether you overshoot upwards or let the bar drop too far. Correct one habit at a time instead of immediately buying a more expensive rod.
When the Training Rod helps
Willy sells the Training Rod for 25g. Below Fishing level 5, its bar behaves as if your Fishing level were 5. It catches basic fish below difficulty 50 at normal quality and accepts neither bait nor tackle. It is a learning tool with real restrictions, not a way to catch every fish.
If your target cannot be caught with it, change rods before spending the whole day repeating casts. The Training Rod reference lists eligible fish. Normal-quality catches can still help you practise and build experience.
Check four conditions before moving
| Condition | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Location | Ocean, river, mountain lake or another specific water? |
| Season | Does the target appear in the current season? |
| Time | Are you within its listed hours? |
| Weather | Does it need rain, sun or either? |
For example, the standard ocean Tuna listing gives Summer or Winter, 6am–7pm, in any weather. Sardine is listed for the ocean in Spring, Fall or Winter, also 6am–7pm. Other locations and special methods can have exceptions; use the relevant fish record rather than generalising one example.
Plan one fishing trip
Our recommendation: select a target first, check its conditions, take the appropriate rod, and leave enough room for what you catch. Decide whether a fish is needed for a collection, bundle, recipe or gift before selling it. When a target does not appear, recheck the conditions before treating bad luck as a broken mechanic.
