Apex Legends Armor Swap Guide: Shield Cores & Overcharge
Armor Swapping Means Checking the Shield Core
EA describes Shield Cores as holding shield charge. A swap is not automatically a permanent armor-tier upgrade. Read the actual charge before taking another duel.
Know what overcharge does
EA says taking a core above your current Legend armor tier can temporarily overcharge your shields. That excess cannot be restored and lasts up to 30 seconds before remaining excess drains. The color of a dropped core describes its remaining charge, not simply the original owner's Legend level. Read the available charge instead of relying on the enemy's earlier armor appearance.
Decide whether you can safely open the box
GetCheatBeacon's tactical advice is to identify the escape route first. A death box in the open can become a trap if another opponent still has a clear angle. A quick shield decision should not turn into a full inventory search while your teammates are fighting. If reaching the box requires crossing an exposed lane, consider whether recovering from cover is the safer option.
- Locate the box before you commit to moving toward it.
- Use the available cover and check whether another opponent can challenge the interaction.
- Read the core's charge, make the swap if useful, and leave the inventory promptly.
- Reassess your actual shield state before taking the next duel.
Practise the interaction without promising an instant win
Learn your own platform's inventory controls in lower-pressure situations. The goal is fewer unnecessary menu movements, not blindly opening every box. A swap can improve your resources but cannot solve poor positioning, a reload problem or being surrounded. This guide gives no universal millisecond target or claim that a swap is always faster or safer than every healing option.
Wildcard has a different inventory and recovery structure. Check the mode rather than treating a Core armor tutorial as a complete guide to all playlists. See the mode-aware squad guide for the broader distinction.
