Overwatch Role Guide: Tank, Damage, Support & Team Responsibilities
Overwatch is built around three core roles: Tank, Damage and Support. Each role contributes differently to team fights, and current Overwatch also divides those roles into additional sub-role categories with their own passive effects.
The Three Core Roles
- Tank: creates space, absorbs or avoids pressure and helps determine where the team can safely fight.
- Damage: applies elimination pressure, controls threatening angles and converts opportunities into kills.
- Support: keeps teammates functioning through healing, utility, damage, positioning and fight-saving abilities.
None of the roles operates independently. Tanks need follow-up, Damage heroes need resources and space, and Supports need protection and useful positioning.
Tank Responsibilities
A Tank’s job is not simply to absorb the most damage.
Good Tank play involves:
- Contesting useful space.
- Forcing enemies away from strong positions.
- Protecting important routes.
- Starting or denying engagements.
- Creating opportunities for Damage heroes.
- Remaining within reasonable Support reach.
Current Tank Sub-Roles
Current Overwatch divides Tanks into sub-roles including:
- Bruiser
- Initiator
- Stalwart
These sub-roles provide different passive behaviors, so two Tanks can contribute very differently even though both occupy the same core role.
Damage Responsibilities
Damage heroes create pressure and punish exposed enemies.
Useful Damage play includes:
- Holding threatening sightlines.
- Finishing low-health enemies.
- Pressuring enemy Supports.
- Controlling flanks.
- Using mobility to create additional angles.
- Following the Tank’s space when the team commits.
Damage players should not measure contribution only by total damage numbers. Damage that never creates eliminations or objective pressure may have limited value.
Current Damage Sub-Roles
Current Overwatch divides Damage heroes into sub-role categories including:
- Sharpshooter
- Flanker
- Specialist
- Recon
Each category has a distinct passive effect, reinforcing different styles of Damage play.
Support Responsibilities
Support is not only about healing.
Support heroes contribute through combinations of:
- Healing.
- Damage.
- Defensive utility.
- Mobility.
- Fight-saving cooldowns.
- Enabling aggressive teammates.
A Support who focuses exclusively on healing bars can miss opportunities to apply pressure or use utility that prevents the damage from happening in the first place.
Current Support Sub-Roles
Like Tank and Damage, Support heroes now use sub-role groupings with different passive benefits.
Pay attention to the current passive attached to your selected hero because it can change how that hero survives, heals or contributes during fights.
Positioning by Role
Tank
Position where you can contest meaningful space without moving so far forward that your Supports cannot help you.
Damage
Use angles that pressure enemies while preserving a route back to cover or the team.
Support
Position where you can reach important teammates without standing directly in the enemy’s easiest line of fire.
Play Around the Objective
Every role contributes to objective control differently.
A Tank may contest or push space. Damage heroes can control approaches. Supports keep the team stable enough to remain on or around the objective.
Do not assume everyone should physically stand on the objective at all times. Often the strongest objective control comes from controlling the routes enemies must use to reach it.
Coordinate Cooldowns
Team fights are easier when major abilities are not wasted simultaneously.
Try to recognize:
- When your Tank is engaging.
- When Damage heroes are committing to an angle.
- When Supports have important defensive tools available.
Five players using strong abilities at unrelated times are easier to defeat than a team using them around the same engagement.
Do Not Overextend Beyond Your Role’s Support
A Tank cannot create useful space if nobody can follow. A Damage hero cannot flank indefinitely without an escape plan. A Support cannot help a teammate who repeatedly leaves line of sight.
Strong role play still depends on distance and coordination.
Choosing a Role
If you enjoy:
- Leading engagements and controlling space: Tank may suit you.
- Mechanical pressure, angles and eliminations: Damage may suit you.
- Healing, utility and fight management: Support may suit you.
Try several heroes within the role rather than assuming one hero represents the entire category.
Bottom Line
Overwatch roles are about responsibilities, not just labels. Tanks control space, Damage heroes convert pressure into eliminations, and Supports keep the team functional through healing and utility. Current sub-role passives add another layer, so learn both your hero’s kit and the specific role behavior attached to that hero.
