Plan routes before decoration

Nintendo’s growing-island guide recommends placing an early bridge where you cross the river frequently. Its follow-up explains that Island Designer becomes part of later island development after reaching three stars, with additional cliff and waterscaping permits purchased using Nook Miles.

Sketch a working island

  1. List your everyday destinations: home, shops, museum and the residents you visit.
  2. Draw the route between those destinations before choosing decorative districts.
  3. Identify river crossings or height changes that interrupt the route.
  4. Choose one neighborhood to complete first.
  5. Walk the proposed route before committing to a larger redesign.

This layout method is editorial advice. It is intended to reduce repeated rebuilding, not to guarantee an island rating.

Before Island Designer

Work with the land you can currently reach. Reserve enough space around proposed house locations for the paths and gardens you intend to add. Keep a list of future ideas separately from the construction you can actually start today.

After the app and permits unlock

Paths, cliff construction and waterscaping are different planning decisions. Choose the permits needed for your specific project rather than buying based only on a screenshot of another island. Sketch water and elevation changes before you start shaping a large section.

Design for everyday use

Try the route while carrying out an ordinary task. If a beautiful entrance forces repeated detours to shops, consider moving the decoration away from the main walkway. Leave room for your planned furniture rather than filling every corner immediately.

One-project checklist

  • Purpose: what does this district improve?
  • Budget: which construction and decoration expenses are still ahead?
  • Access: can you comfortably reach its destinations?
  • Completion: what is the smallest finished version?
