Baldur’s Gate 3 Spell Guide: Slot Levels, Tooltips & Rest Planning
Check the Resource Before Casting
A spell's displayed cost matters as much as its effect. Larian's interface documentation distinguishes actions using spell slots from class-specific resources such as Sorcery Points. Start with the selected character's spellbook and resource display; do not assume that every caster uses the same resource or recovery rule.
Confirm the intended spell variant
Larian's Patch 6 notes document fixes involving selection of different spell-slot types and levels on controller. The practical lesson is to inspect the variant and cost you are about to confirm. An interface problem mentioned in an old patch note is not evidence that the bug still exists, and this guide does not offer an exploit based on it.
Build a plan with more than one expenditure level
GetCheatBeacon recommends identifying a routine option, an option for a dangerous target and a fallback when you do not want to spend the same limited resource. Read whether an effect needs an action, another resource, a particular target or a particular condition. An impressive spell description is not a complete plan for every turn.
| Before confirmation | Question |
|---|---|
| Slot or class resource | Which pool will this particular cast spend? |
| Target and area | Does the preview affect the intended enemies or include allies? |
| Next turn | What useful option remains if this effect is not enough? |
Use the rest interface deliberately
Larian's PS5 overview places short rests, long rests and camp in the main radial interface. Check the game's current descriptions for what your character regains. This page does not collapse all class features into a single rule about which rest restores everything, and does not promise that resting has no story or encounter consequences.
Diagnose the result
Read the combat log when a spell appears ineffective. Verify the actual target, the resource spent and the outcome before rewriting the entire build. In co-op, agree on the next encounter and preparation needs rather than starting while another player is still reviewing spells.
For related decisions, use positioning and dialogue and checks. The planning questions are editorial advice, not a tested best spell rotation.
