Check whether the weapon is Iconic before looking for an upgrade path. Cyberpunk 2077's 2.0 system differs from the older rarity-based system still shown in many launch-era guides.
Understand the 2.x rule
CD PROJEKT RED states that, apart from cyberware, only Iconic weapons can be upgraded under the 2.0 system. Upgrades increase the weapon's Tier. This does not mean every ordinary gun has a missing upgrade button or can be converted into an Iconic through a universal action.
Read the next cost and effect
Inspect the weapon's current description and the proposed upgrade in your menu. Compare the component cost with how often you use the weapon. Keep a build-defining item distinct from a temporary weapon you expect to replace.
Do not evaluate only the damage bar
Read the Iconic effect, weapon type and relevant perks. Test the weapon in the role you intend: an accurate ranged option, close-range pressure or another specific job. An increased Tier does not replace learning the condition that makes its effect useful.
Keep mods and upgrades separate
The 2.0 notes also changed weapon mods and crafting components. Inspect the current install or upgrade confirmation before committing materials. A mod slot, an attachment and a Tier upgrade are separate systems and should not be assumed to produce the same result.
Choose a practical upgrade test
- Use the weapon in a familiar encounter.
- Identify what is limiting its usefulness.
- Check whether the next upgrade addresses that problem.
- Upgrade and compare under similar conditions.
These rules are for the 2.x system on supported current platforms. If you are playing the older console release or a legacy PC version, verify that version's menus before applying the same instructions.
